Cancer, better therapy only by funding molecular tests

Pandemic and cancer

“In 2020 there were 377,000 new cancer diagnoses in Italy and more than 180,000 deaths from oncological diseases are expected by 2021”, he recalls Andrea Sironi, director of the Airc Foundation. “This is why we say that cancers remain a health emergency, and not only in our country”. The pandemic has slowed down the prevention campaigns, has extended the timing of diagnoses and created inconvenience to people already in therapy: the risk is to see an increase in the number of cases diagnosed at a later stage and those of deaths in the near future. “On the other hand, the pandemic has also brought greater awareness of the role of science and its ability to provide the right answers to protect our health“, adds Sironi. “This must push us to multiply our efforts in the battle against cancer.”

The Rai and Airc television marathon has made it possible to raise more than 120 million euros in 26 years so far, more than 7 million in the last edition alone. Thanks to the contribution of 4.5 million supporters and 20,000 volunteers, Airc has been able to give continuity to the work of over 5,000 scientists, helping to bring leading scientists back to Italy and train new generations of researchers. In the last ten years it has invested more than one billion euros in the best Italian cancer research, helping to increase the survival and life expectancy of cancer patients. In fact, today 3.6 million citizens have passed a cancer diagnosis, an increase of 36% compared to 10 years ago. In addition to the stories of the people who have overcome the disease, in this edition of “The days of research”, doctors and researchers will tell us about the progress made by science, the projects underway and the goals for the future. Like Alessia Ciarrocchi, head of an Airc project that studies the involvement of so-called “junk” DNA in the development of tumors such as that of the thyroid and breast at Ausl-Irccs in Reggio Emilia. “Airc is fundamental for cancer research in Italy,” Ciarrocchi reports. “In a historical period in which the trend is to focus on safer and quicker results, the Foundation has the courage to invest in basic research, the one that does not produce results that can be immediately brought to the patient’s bed. which allows us to broaden our knowledge. In recent months we have all experienced the importance of research as the only tool to combat the emergency. But if research has been able to provide rapid answers we owe it to the discoveries and the work of the scientists who have preceded “.

Rai ambassadors for cancer research will be Carlo Conti e Antonella Clerici, which will pass the baton to numerous radio and television broadcasts during the eight days of the marathon. “The alliance between Airc and Rai has contributed, year after year, to breaking down many taboos on cancer, making sick people feel less alone and raising significant funds for the development of new treatments”, he comments Marinella Soldi, president of RAI. “Also for the new edition of the Research Days, the whole Rai is mobilized in a relay, with over 200 spaces, including TV radio and of course online: because we have to speak to the whole country, on all platforms, to reach all spectators . Entertainment and news programs will pass the baton, each with its own language, but always providing clear, accessible and verified information.
