Alzheimer’s Probable Cause Is Toxic Proteins In The Brain – Medicine

by admin

Australian researchers have identified a probable cause of Alzheimer’s disease, paving the way for new forms of prevention and treatment of the most prevalent form of dementia in the world. The study by the Curtin University of Perth, led by the director of the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute, John Mamo, points to a dispersion, from the blood into the brain, of fat particles carrying toxic proteins.

“It was already known that the hallmark of Alzheimer’s patients was the progressive accumulation in the brain of deposits of toxic proteins called beta-amyloids, but it was not known where these originated, or how they were deposited in the brain,” writes the professor. Mamo on PLOS Biology. “Our research shows that these toxic protein deposits are most likely spread into the brain by fat-bearing particles in the blood, the lipoproteins. This path from the blood to the brain is significant because if we can control the levels of amyloid lipoproteins in the blood and preventing their dispersion opens the way for new potential treatments to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss. “

While more studies are needed, adds Mamo, the results show that the buildup of these toxic protein deposits in the blood can be prevented through the person’s diet and with drugs that can specifically target amyloid lipoproteins, reducing the risk or at least slowing the progress of the disease.
