Measles Outbreaks on the Rise in Italy: Importance of Vaccination Highlighted

In Italy, the issue of measles outbreaks is becoming increasingly prevalent, with over 200 cases reported in the first three months of 2024. This alarming increase in cases, with the majority occurring in unvaccinated individuals, highlights the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of this highly contagious viral disease.

Despite the availability of vaccines against measles since the late 1970s, vaccination rates in Italy are still below the 95% safety threshold recommended by the World Health Organization. This discrepancy in vaccination coverage is evident in the fact that only 86% of children for whom vaccination is indicated by the National Vaccine Prevention Plan received both scheduled doses.

To determine if an individual is immune to measles, serological tests can be performed to measure the presence of IgG antibodies in the blood. These tests can be easily requested from a general practitioner and can help determine if vaccination is necessary in cases where antibodies are absent or insufficient.

In the event of exposure to a confirmed case of measles, non-immune individuals are advised to receive a dose of the vaccine within 72 hours of contact. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent the spread of measles and protect against serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
