Apple Car: Apple’s car of the future starts with software?

Maybe therecar from Applethe self-driving electric vehicle, the Titan project on which Apple is said to stand working for almost fifteen years now (since 2008 to be precise), it is turning into something else: an operating system Apple Car evolved for the cars of the future, in a hybrid world between proprietary vehicles and “compatible” vehicles.

Apple wasted time and engineers in the course of the development of its electric car, the rumors that have circulated in recent years (with constant postponements to the release date of the Cupertino car) but there would be reasons not only technological behind it.

The case

We talk about Apple Car again, but for the US media “it’s like the Loch Ness monster or the bigfoot”

The market is crowded: the production of electric cars is becoming a common phenomenon for the big names in the automotive sector, both with hybrid and full electric vehicles, and this has also had consequences for companies that have tried to enter the market coming from from other sectors. For a Tesla which basically defined the category despite having been born with no experience of conventional thermal cars, there is one Dyson which instead spent half a billion pounds and then decided to abandon the project because it is too expensive and, as its creator James Dyson puts it, “exposed to excessive competition from traditional manufacturers”.

Apple has never openly stated that it is working on a self-driving electric car, as it did Google con Waymobut the hiring (and layoffs) of managers and executives in the sector make it clear that the project is there.

Everything the company has done so far in the industry has been develop one of the infotainment systems for cars, i.e. Apple Car. According to Apple in the US it is present in 90% of new cars and 75% and more of those who want to buy a car expect to find it on board. With the developer conference now underway in Cupertino, however, one was presented new version that takes a step forward.

The new Apple Car is basically an operating system that replaces that of the car and occupies not only the central display on the dashboard but also that of the driver. Allowing, with very iPhone-Style graphics, to give all the information not only on the entertainment part and maps (which, however, until now were the “poor” version on the phone) but also for the guide: speed, tachometer, built-in navigation, car sensors, fuel and engine temperature lights, along with weather, clock, calendar and everything in between. Basically, Car Play transforms from an iPhone projected onto the dashboard in a real iPad on wheels which competes with vehicle-integrated infotainment systems. In addition, the opening through a new type of programming interface for third-party developers allows you to also have apps built ad hoc to work on the Apple dashboard. Google has already done a similar thing by transforming its Android Auto into Android Automotive.

Bloomberg confirms: Apple’s car set to debut in 2025

Apple Car will be available at the end of 2023 (but it is not known on which cars exactly) and its presence has already sparked the hypotheses of developers and analysts. One of the most common hypotheses is that Apple is working on this Apple Car software in terms of the operating system of its car and that this will be what we will see on board the Titan Project. But there are also those who argue that there will be a very different development. The current evolution of the automotive market is moving more and more towards standardization: the production of electric platforms that could be made for example by Chinese factories and sold to European and American manufacturers who would add bodywork and customizations, a bit like what happens in the world. of Windows-based personal computers that use a few large Asian suppliers behind the scenes to then create their own models with very marked aesthetic and functional differences but still based on very similar specifications.

Another hypothesis is that Apple may have taken this path and to be working with its Chinese subcontractor manufacturers to make “its” Apple Car which would have both the bodywork and the interiors and above all the operating system to make it very different from the competition on the market today. To create a car of this type, Apple would be carrying out the “secret for all to see” development of its operating system through the Apple Car infotainment which now reaches a higher and more interesting level of maturity for the market and developers.
