Apple, goodbye to the iPod. After twenty years, the production of the most famous music player in the world has stopped

Twenty years in the world of technology is a geological era, maybe even two. And for some time now, all the functions that we previously relegated to multiple devices have been easily carried out by the smartphone that we always carry with us. So Apple has decided: the iPod, the most famous music player in the world and the one that really started the second life of the Apple company, will no longer be produced. In reality, only the iPod Touch had remained on the list for several years, a sort of younger brother of the iPhone, very similar aesthetically but with reduced functionality.

The last generation of the iPod Touch was from 2019, the seventh, arrived after decades of commercial success even if the iPod was no longer a strategic product for some time. Even if the latest Touch, with the A10 Bionic chip inside, did a lot of things well: not only music saved locally but also streaming and video games, thanks also to the beautiful display. Over the years, the original idea of ​​iPod creator Tony Fadell has seen shape and functionality change. And Steve Jobs, who as always co had seen very long, let the device make its way freely, also because the idea of ​​the iPhone comes from there.

With the closure of the iPod Touch production line in any case, Apple delivers two decades of digital music history, which began with the first model with a clickable wheel and a hard disk inside. Then the various evolutions and reworkings, the iPod Shuffle and its basic forms, the sixth generation iPod Nano to wear on the wrist (and with a shape not so far from the current Watch), the iPod Video which was almost an ancestor possible of the first iPhone. And through all these generations, a real fortune for Apple, which has become the go-to name in digital music.

A vocation that continues today with the AirPods line and with the “spirit” of the iPod that survives in the new products: a part of the iPod will always survive in the iPhone and in the Watch, even if the physical object has been consigned to history. But the latest units are still available and the iPod Touch will be sold until the inventory runs out.
