Apple has removed one of the world‘s most popular Quran apps from the Chinese market following a request from the Beijing government. According to the BBC, the app – called Quran Majeed and used by millions of Muslims – has been removed because it contains illegal religious texts. The Chinese government did not respond to requests for comment from the British broadcaster. The removal of Quran Majeed was reported by Apple Censorship, a website that monitors the apps offered on the US giant’s App Store globally.
For its part, the producer of the offending app – the company PDMS – announced in a statement that “according to Apple, our Quran Majeed app has been removed from the Chinese App Store because it includes content that requires additional documentation from the Chinese authorities. “. The PDMS is “trying to get in touch with the Cyberspace Administration of China and the competent Chinese authorities to solve this problem”, the note continues, specifying that its app has nearly one million users in China.
