New Study Shows Salmon Consumption Lowers Cholesterol Levels
Recent research published in the Journal of Nutrition has shed light on the health benefits of consuming salmon. The study, conducted by scholars at the University of Colorado, has identified at least four specific compounds found in salmon that can reduce levels of total cholesterol, “bad” cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B in the blood, ultimately protecting the health of the cardiovascular system.
Many individuals who are diagnosed with high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) are advised to make dietary changes, particularly regarding their intake of specific foods. While some foods are often eliminated from the diet due to their reputation as being high in unhealthy fats, recent findings suggest that consuming salmon can actually help to lower cholesterol levels.
The research involved a study with 41 obese or overweight adults who followed a Mediterranean diet for two five-week periods, consuming two portions of salmon per week. Through a comprehensive analysis of plasma samples obtained from the participants, the researchers were able to identify specific compounds and metabolites associated with salmon consumption.
The study revealed that the plasma concentrations of 48 salmon-specific compounds and 30 metabolites, primarily lipid-based, increased significantly over the course of the study, leading to improvements in cardiometabolic health indicators. These benefits included reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B.
The authors of the study expressed their excitement over the findings, stating that they are the first to identify the specific bioactive compounds of salmon that increase in plasma after consumption as part of a Mediterranean diet. These food-specific compounds have been associated with short-term improvements in indicators of cardiometabolic health.
