Recently, a bug in Android devices that can cause abnormally fast battery consumption and even cause overheating occurs. Unexpectedly, the culprit behind this bug is Google’s Messages App. A bug in the app would keep the camera on an Android phone on and keep the live feed capture running even when the Google Messages app is out of the way, causing the phone to overheat and run out of battery headaches .
A handy option in the attachments menu on the Google Messages app allows users to quickly capture and share pictures or images. This option will capture the phone’s camera as an instant feed, and a new bug in the Google Messages app reportedly allows the capture of the instant feed to continue running, even if the user jumps out of the Google Messages app .
Another user disclosed that he found that on an Android phone using the Android 12 operating system, after jumping out of the Google Messages app, the indicator light of the phone’s camera was still on, so he determined that even after closing the Google Messages app, the app was still on Use a camera.
As of now, there has been no official announcement from Google about this vulnerability, so there won’t be any patches for a while. But the crux of the vulnerability is all about the misuse of the camera in the Google Messages app, so users can disable the app’s use of the phone’s camera simply by disabling the viewport feature in the app.
It doesn’t matter if you still need the viewfinder function, the user can also disable the camera’s access by the following methods. First, long press the icon of the Google Messages app to open the Context Menu, then select the “App Info” option in the table, then tap “Permission” on the next page Then click on the “Camera” option, and finally select “Don’t allow” in the next screen to close the camera’s access. This way, the Google Messages app won’t keep using the camera behind the scenes, and the phone won’t inexplicably lose too much power or overheat.
As this is only a temporary workaround, users have to go to the trouble of closing the Google Messages app from the menu of recently used apps every time they finish using the viewfinder feature.
