Brazil: Patients Authorized to Plant Medicinal Cannabis – Last Hour

(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, June 15 – In Brazil, the sixth section of the Superior Court of Justice (Stj, equivalent to the Supreme Court) has decided to allow three patients a safe conduct for the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Two cases were analyzed. In one, the patient asked to be allowed to grow 15 cannabis sativa (popularly known as marijuana) seedlings every 3 months and to produce cannabidiol for his own exclusive use. This patient explained that he has diabetes, generalized anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, mixed anxiety and depressive disorder, recurrent depressive disorder and social phobias.

The patient already had the authorization of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) for the import, but he asked to do the home cultivation without incurring a criminal offense and for this reason he was arrested.

In the other case, two patients presented medical documentation certifying the need for treatment with cannabidiol-based drugs. According to the doctors, these lead to significant improvements in their health conditions, while other traditional treatments have not worked. (HANDLE).
