Breast cancer: 3,800 new cases per year discovered already in the metastatic phase

by admin

EVERY year in Italy, over 3,800 new cases of breast cancer are already metastatic at the time of diagnosis. For these women – and for those in whom the disease progresses even if discovered at an early stage – hope can come from pharmacological innovation which in recent years has opened many new perspectives. The national campaign “I am a Woman with #metastable Carcinoma” is dedicated to this theme, launched last May by the association Meet Donna Onlus thanks to the non-conditioning contribution of Seagen, which includes a cycle of virtual webinars and initiatives until October 13, National Day of Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Metastatic breast cancer, the #Metastabile campaign kicks off

“Metastatic breast disease is a complex and difficult topic for patients to address,” she explains Adriana Bonifacino, President of IncontraDonna Onlus: “It is therefore important to provide women with communication that is clearer and more understandable than ever. Diagnostic-therapeutic advances and above all the availability of more effective anticancer drugs have led to an increase in overall survival. Hence the need to promote a series of initiatives to promote correct information and to make people understand how the word ‘metastatic’ should be less scary than in the more recent past “.

The second meeting and the survey

It is estimated that metastatic cancer, a disease that is curable today even if not yet curable, affects over 37,000 women in our country. The webinars are from time to time dedicated to one of the three macro-areas of the peninsula: the second meeting, which took place yesterday and which can be reviewed on the association’s website and Facebook channel, focused on the Northern Italy area. The campaign also includes a survey on the perception of the ‘metastatic’ theme.

Advanced breast cancer, efficacy of new therapy confirmed

“We are deeply convinced that cancer can also be defeated through greater awareness of both the population and local and national institutions”, concludes Bonifacino: “Breast cancer is the most frequent neoplasm among women residing in our country and is growing. Consequently, the number of metastatic cases or in any case diagnosed at a more advanced stage may also increase in the coming years. For this reason, efforts must be concentrated on promoting a new culture of oncological disease at 360 degrees ”.
