Canon announces the development of the R3 mirrorless camera

by admin

Canon has announced the development of the EOS R3 mirrorless camera, a new high-end model in the RF family. The new machine is positioned immediately above the R5, the professional mirrorless introduced by the company in 2020, but recalls in design and specifications the absolute flagship, the 1DX Mark III SLR.
The mirrorless cameras presented by Canon in the last two years have already convinced many professionals to abandon the pentaprism and to rely on the new RF lens system, introduced in 2018 with the EOS R. However, there is a specific group of photographers, mainly agency ones. that follow sporting and current events, which find in the characteristics of the Canon 1DX the right tool for their work. With the R3, Canon is aiming precisely at this segment, with a speed-optimized camera, with a next-generation autofocus coupled with a burst of 30 frames per second, but a lower sensor resolution (to allow for lighter files) and a battery integrated grip – as on the body of the 1DX – to ensure greater autonomy.

Today’s is a development announcement: it means that the EOS R3, in fact, is preparing to enter a phase of public “beta”, during which Canon will supply the camera to chosen photographers to allow them to test it on the road (in specific: at the Tokyo Olympics scheduled for this summer) listen to their feedback and finalize the product. There is no final release date, but we imagine that the R3 will definitely see the light towards the end of the year.

Canon has for now decided to share only a few key features of the machine. We know, in fact, that the design is much closer to that of the 1DX reflex, than to that of the light and compact camera bodies seen so far in the EOS R mirrorless series. We also learn that the sensor will be a backlit BSI stacked CMOS, of which however, the effective resolution has not yet been announced. The processor will be the same Digic X already successfully implemented on EOS R5 and R6, while the tropicalization level (weather resistance) will be the same as in 1DX Mark III.

All this translates into a machine optimized for very high speeds. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus will allow for example to keep the focus on the subjects in every single frame of the 30 frames per second provided by the burst. Not only that: it will be able to automatically focus on the face or eyes of a human subject, but also on the eyes of a bird or other animals, without intervention by the photographer (who can adapt this option to their needs in settings). There will also be an unexpected gem, and that is the aiming of the focus based on the movement of the photographer’s eye in the viewfinder. That is, the camera will be able to understand which subject the photographer is staring at at any moment, focusing accordingly. It is a function that Canon had already experimented and patented in the 90s for a short period, and then had placed it in a drawer, probably waiting for the technology to allow it to be implemented adequately.

Net of the technical characteristics, the announcement of the development of the EOS R3 is important for the whole sector. It proves that even a company like Canon, which only last year entrusted the cusp of its commercial pyramid to a DSLR, is working hard on a definitive transition. The retirement of the pentaprism in favor of mirrorless cameras even in the equipment of the most demanding professionals is a process that began as early as 2018, with the first EOS R and then continued at a rapid pace over the last three years, with the expansion of the range. However, this R3 is Canon’s first real official admission of the inevitability of this process for all professional photographers. For now, the 1DX Mark III SLR remains the absolute flagship, but the final advance of mirrorless cameras has also begun for the historic Japanese brand. The “3” in the name of the R3 clearly indicates that this is still an approach model, but that within a couple of years, an “R1” will definitely occupy the top spot in Canon’s professional offering.
