In Schwaz, in the Austrian Tyrol, a European pilot vaccination project for people aged 16 and over took place last March.
The European Union had made available 100,000 doses to curb the spread of the South African variant, which is very present in the district. Now a study demonstrates its effectiveness: within a little while 70% of the population was immunized and cases dropped by 60%, as the Tiroler Tageszeitung writes. Positive effects were also found on hospitalizations and cases among young people. The study was carried out by the University of Salzburg, the Medical University of Innsbruck, Florian Krammer of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and Michael Hummer of Gesundheit Österreich.
