CATANIA – The operations of multiple organ harvesting from a patient who died following a cerebral haemorrhage were concluded in the early afternoon in the Cannizzaro hospital in Catania. Consent was expressed by family members. It is the second donation in 20 days in the hospital. The observation began yesterday and this morning was followed by the intervention of the surgical teams: staff of the Ismett of Palermo took the liver and kidneys, while the corneas were taken by the ophthalmologists of the Cannizzaro hospital.
In fact, the process involved various operating units of the hospital: from Neurology for the attestation of brain death to Ophthalmology intervened for the sampling, in addition of course to Anesthesia and Intensive Care To all operators the general manager Salvatore Giuffrida expressed his thanks: “A thought – he said – in particular goes to family , which even in an excruciating moment, with great sensitivity and altruism have allowed to save and improve the lives of others. A gesture so important that the Regional Health Service, in coordination with the Transplant Center is committed to promoting and supporting ». In recent days, the relatives of another patient had expressed their consent to the donation, but it was not possible to perform the removal as the organs were not deemed suitable.
