Ces 2022, as will be the largest tech fair in the world

by admin

“In these two years, technology has allowed us to have fun and feel close even without leaving the house, it has allowed many people to continue working,” says Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association which organizes the CES in Las Vegas. It was the last major tech event before the pandemic and the first to resume after two years of virtual trade shows and launches. What has changed? “We have learned that there is no need to go to the office every day, but staying at home affects creativity and makes communication worse. We have hired many people, but building new relationships is difficult if you are not there. I’ll tell you more: remotely it is more difficult to maintain certain standards of ethics, honesty and sharing, it takes more time and more effort ”. Meanwhile, the commitment consists of a European tour that touched Paris and Amsterdam with two CES Unveiled (“But we dream of being able to organize an event in Italy, sooner or later”), and then in the colossal work of organizing this event. year. Expected from 5 to 8 January, in attendance, and also massive: over 1100 exhibitors, an exhibition area equal to 12 football fields. Edition number 55 will be open as always to operators, analysts and media from all over the world, but access will require proof of vaccination.

Last year, the Consumer Electronics Show was held digitally only. And this time?
“It will be a live event, with the most important sessions being streamed for those who can’t be in Las Vegas. But all the material will be accessible online for 30 days, along with content specific to our platform. Each exhibitor will have a presence on our digital site, a space that they can use freely. We know we are very good at creating a physical event, but we are working hard to produce the best possible digital event: for us it means fielding new skills, and it is a demanding challenge that combines with the difficulties of new security protocols and organization”.

The slogan for 2022 is “technology for a responsible future”. What does it mean?
“When we talk about technology, I think we have an obligation to society to look at its possible uses. Let’s take fire: it can give heat or destroy. So politics must encourage innovation, but also determine when the use of a technology is acceptable and when not. Do not ban cars, for example, but require that they have a seat belt and that they do not exceed a certain speed limit. And lawmakers must set the standards, the rules that make it possible to develop common technologies, used by as many people as possible. Of course, for this they have to work in concert with companies ”.

So the technology should not be completely free but regulated by governments.
“I think you don’t have to ask for permission to create new technology, but that when a technology grows, it’s up to governments to tell you how it can be used. There are shared values: for example, child pornography, which in most cultures is illegal. On the one hand it must be established that it is also illegal on technological means, on the other hand it is the technology itself that provides us with the means to limit the spread of child pornography. Of course, they are tools that can be improved, but in the meantime it is important to establish rules on which everyone agrees “.

How can technology help people live better?
Technology helps people live better in many ways. Let’s take disabilities, a huge problem: we have a foundation that focuses on just that, and people with all kinds of disabilities and all kinds of companies are involved. In my opinion we must not impose specific solutions, but let each one develop his own, so the offer will grow, with the competition the prices are lowered and the choice is widened. Let’s take health, for example: there is a Dutch startup that has developed a system for the precise diagnostics of some retinal pathologies using a normal smartphone “.

This year CES introduced some new categories, such as Space Tech, Food Tech Mental Health, Digital Assets. How are they defined?
“We study market trends, trying to understand what’s interesting on the horizon. And certainly Space is the future, we have seen it from the interest that the new missions have generated in the public and from the first practical effects of these experiences. Companies also invest heavily in technologies applied to food, because the planet is growing more and more and resources are limited. Not only in raw materials, also in labor. And then there is the issue of the elderly, of those who are alone at home, of those in need of assistance, including mental assistance. Another sector in great turmoil is that of digital assets, we have all seen the movement around NFT “.

But can we still call these technologies “consumer”?
“We talked about it for a long time, and we decided to focus first of all on the aspect of innovation, in the end CES is a show, a spectacle. Let’s take for example a company like Panasonic, which until a few years ago produced almost exclusively consumer technology, while today they have activities that are not for the most part aimed directly at the public: it will be there, it has every right to be there, because it continues to innovate to amaze “.

Has the pandemic changed our relationship with technology?
“In many ways, but mainly in the fact that today we value technology more. For the Christmas season, sales forecasts are excellent, and our analysis also shows a fact to reflect on: Americans, and not just them, are ready to spend more for better technology. It is the revenge of the premium segment ”.

And isn’t the lack of chips likely to curb this enthusiasm?
“It is a problem that is reflected more in the lower price ranges, the chips available are used first of all in the most profitable products”.

Speaking of premium brands, will Apple finally attend CES?
“As usual, it will not have its own space, but I would not say that Apple is not participating in the Ces. It has been part of our association for years and takes part in the organization. He sends a lot of people, who take part in the panels and work hard to browse and look for new ideas among the exhibitors ”.

Over the years, the VCR (1970), the first video game (Pong, 1975), the compact disc (1981), the Commodore 64 (1982), the DVD (1996), the Xbox were launched at CES in Las Vegas. (2001), Blu-ray (2004) and many other gadgets and technologies. What’s the next big thing waiting for us around the corner?
“I am thinking of artificial intelligence, which can make our lives longer and safer, starting with self-driving cars. But here we are already talking about robotics, because a car that drives alone is a robot. Certainly then artificial intelligence and robotics will also change medicine, and the pandemic has shown us how remote healthcare is not only possible but necessary. For all this and many other services you need a fast connection, so it is easy to predict that 5G will grow exponentially. For me, many technologies together will mark our future. No one can do everything alone, there is a need for alliances, accessible knowledge, shared patents. And this is why the CES is so important, because it is an essential moment of encounter and comparison ”.

Where there is also space for startups, at Eureka Park: what will it be like this year?
“We are still defining the list of those who will participate, but in general I can say that it will be a little less crowded than in previous editions, also because the Chinese presence will be more contained. On the other hand, the European representation will be more substantial: about seventy from Holland, a good number from France, and fifty also from Italy ”.
