Choosing Family Medicine in Extremadura: The Unconventional Career Path of Claudia González

Claudia González, a young medical professional, has made a bold decision by choosing to train in Family and Community Medicine in Extremadura, despite other more coveted options. Having placed 3,525 out of over 13,000 applicants in the MIR exam, Claudia opted for a position in a hospital in Badajoz, Extremadura.

Originally from Ponferrada, Claudia’s decision was influenced by her partner living in Badajoz and her familiarity with the city from her university studies. She values the quality of life and tranquility that Extremadura offers, which made her choose to settle in the region for her training.

Claudia has always been interested in Family Medicine, citing the close patient interactions as a major draw. She is also passionate about rural medicine, which is crucial in addressing the shortage of physicians in rural areas of Extremadura. Despite surprising some with her choice, Claudia is determined to make a difference in the region through her work as a family doctor.

Another young professional, David Hidalgo, also chose a position in Extremadura for his training in Intensive Medicine. Coming from Ribera del Fresno, David appreciates the quality of life and the good hospitals in Badajoz. He acknowledges that the region is not a popular choice among MIR applicants due to poor communication but is committed to staying and working in Extremadura after completing his training.

Both Claudia and David’s decisions highlight the importance of considering factors beyond prestige and location in choosing a training position. They are setting an example by prioritizing personal and professional fulfillment in their career paths.
