Chronic urticaria is unfortunately a particularly annoying and debilitating disorder of which unfortunately too little is said. Let’s find out more about this disease and what it entails.
Istud Foundation, the independent business school operating in the field of higher professional training and management research, launches the research project “The journey into treatment: urticaria, a little recognized disease”, With the support of Novartis.
The study will be conducted on patients suffering from chronic urticaria, still poorly understood debilitating skin disease characterized by the presence of skin rashes O red wheals, swollen, itchy and come back painful, among the most frequent and common forms of dermatological pathologies. It is estimated that 20% of the population will experience at least one episode of urticaria in their lifetime, and if an episode of acute urticaria is frequent enough and fortunately disappears within a few days, chronic urticaria is characterized by the persistence of symptoms for at least six weeks.

L‘urticaria chronic in Italy afflicts between 250,000 and 500,000 people, and has an intermittent trend, characterized by periods of activity and quiescence that alternate in an unpredictable way. Although the presence of autoantibodies is detectable in about half of the cases, suggesting an autoimmune etiology, in the other half of the cases it is not possible to trace a trigger.
Chronic urticaria: possible treatments
The project, outlined i treatment paths of those who are called to deal with this disease through the tool of narrative medicine. In this regard, the Istud Foundation has collected 384 individual stories from patients and doctors in over 40 centers throughout the country, aiming to map a population
To submit their stories and emotions, patients and professionals connected to the site www.medicinanarrativa.eu and section www.medicinanarrativa.eu/orticaria, where they were able to fill in the questionnaires dedicated to them.
Given the specific nature of thechronic urticaria, too often filed as ‘minor’ and underestimated in its actual consequences, the research aims to recognize greater importance and attention both to patients and to the professionals who deal with them.
All this with a view to turning on the lights on this important pathological condition that still today seems to be characterized by the persistent lack of effective therapeutic tools of care. As dermatologists and immunologists say to express the impotence of the medical profession on this condition: “Better a tiger in the study than a patient with chronic urticaria”.
