Brussels, April 14 (beraking latest news Salute) – From March 2020 to the end of February 2021 in the European Union and in the EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) there were about 685 thousand more deaths than the average recorded in the years from 2016 to 2019. It is what Eurostat calculated.

Data for January and February 2021 indicated that the second wave of the pandemic was gradually losing strength, with death rates returning to historic levels in many countries, with the exception of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, Estonia and Malta. In the whole of 2020, about 540 thousand more deaths were recorded than the average of 2016-19. From mid-March to mid-May 2020 there were over 175 thousand more deaths, while from October to December 2020 there were over 340 thousand.

The deaths recorded are due to the most varied causes, but the statistical deviation from previous years provides a rough idea of the likely impact of the pandemic caused by the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus.
