Berlin, May 26 (beraking latest news salute / Dpa) – When school-age children speak, they emit fewer droplets than adults, a relevant fact regarding the transmission of Covid-19. This is the evidence of a German study, carried out by the La Charité hospital and the Berlin University of Technology, on 15 children aged 8-10 from the state choir and singing academy of the German capital. The emissions were measured with a laser particle counter in a clean room and compared with those of 15 adults.
The research, led by speech therapist Dirk Muerbe, found that children, when they speak, emit the same amount of droplets as adults when they breathe. When babies sing, the aerosol level is similar to that of speaking adults. Consequently, the infectious ability of children through droplets appears to be lower.
According to Muerbe, the research can provide indications on anti-contagion measures during school lessons in the presence and for the resumption of choral singing activities, obviously taking into account the size of the rooms, crowding and ventilation. Until now, the physiatrist recalls, research on the number of droplets emitted by those who breathe, speak or sing had been limited only to adults.
