Covid: experts, virus eradication possible, polio easier – Medicine

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 10 – Completely eradicating Sars-Cov-2 is possible, and it would be easier than polio, although more difficult than smallpox, which remains the only virus eradicated in history. This was stated in a study published by the journal BMJ Global Health, based on the comparison of various scientific and socio-economic factors related to the three viruses.
Experts from the University of Otago in New Zealand analyzed 17 different parameters, from the availability of effective vaccines to the duration of immunity given by the disease, to the effectiveness of governments in managing messages on infection control, giving a score from one to three to each aspect.
The average score was 2.7 for smallpox, 1.6 for Covid and 1.5 for polio. “Even if ours is a preliminary analysis – write the authors of the study – the eradication of Covid-19 seems possible, at least from a technical point of view”.
The Sars-Cov-2, however, underlines the study, has more problems than the other two viruses: among these there is the poor acceptance of the vaccine and the risk of the arrival of more transmissible variants, which could put at risk the global vaccination programs. (HANDLE).
