Rome, 22 April (beraking latest news Salute) – New cases of Covid-19 are decreasing (-7.8%) and deaths (-17.5%), the pressure on hospitals continues to ease. But 4 regions remain above the saturation threshold for admissions to the medical area and 12 for intensive care. The picture emerges from the independent monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation in the week of 14-20 April.

Compared to the previous week, therefore, new cases decrease (90,030 compared to 106,326) and deaths (2,545 compared to 3,083). Also down are currently positive (482,715 compared to 519,220, -7%), people in home isolation (456,309 against 488,742), hospitalizations with symptoms (23,255 compared to 26,952) and intensive care (3,151 against 3,526, -10.6 %).

“The circulation of the virus in our country – comments Nino Cartabellotta, president of the Gimbe Foundation – is still sustained. With the progressive reduction of new weekly cases, the currently positive ones, reached the peak of the third wave on April 5 (570.096), have dropped to 482 thousand, a very high number and underestimated by the insufficient testing & tracing activity “. Moreover, the national data is affected by heterogeneous regional situations: the percentage variation of new cases increases in 3 Regions and currently positive cases are growing in 6 Regions, Gimbe notes.

“The pressure on hospitals is also gradually easing – says Renata Gili, Head of Research on Health Services of the Gimbe Foundation – but the number of beds occupied, both in the medical area and in intensive care, is still high in many regions”.

In detail, for the medical area the curve reached its peak on 6 April (29,337) and began its decline with a reduction of 20.7% in 14 days; but the absolute numbers remain high (23,255) and employment by Covid patients exceeds 40% in 4 regions. In the ICU, the curve peaked on April 6 (3,743), but the descent is slower, with a reduction of 15.8% in 14 days; 3,151 beds remain occupied and in 12 Regions the saturation threshold exceeds 30%.
