Rome, 21 April (beraking latest news Salute) – Covid-19 “is the second leading cause of death in Italy in the period March-April 2020, with a number of deaths just below that of cancers and more than double that of ischemic heart disease”. This is what Istat notes. In the period considered, “in addition to Covid-19, deaths increased for almost all the main causes of death compared to those observed in the same period of the previous five years”.

The most important increase in the frequency of deaths “is observed for pneumonia and influenza. For this group of causes, represented by pneumonia for more than 95%, the frequency of deaths is three times higher than that observed on average in the period 2015-2019. (7,610 compared to 2,445). This increase is also accompanied by the increase in deaths due to other pathologies affecting the respiratory system (+ 26%), recorded both for chronic bronchopulmonary diseases and for the complex of the remaining respiratory diseases “.

Deaths are on the rise “also from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (+ 49%), from hypertensive heart disease (+ 40%) and from diabetes (+ 41%), as well as an increase in symptoms, signs and causes poorly defined or unknown (+ 43%) “.

“With the exception of the aforementioned hypertensive heart diseases – continues Istat – the causes of death attributable to the circulatory system show more contained increases, as in the case of cerebrovascular diseases (+ 13%), ischemic heart diseases (+ 5%) and of the remaining circulatory diseases (+ 10%); however, since these are very frequent causes in the population and remembering that the excess mortality occurred in limited areas of the country, the increases in absolute terms are still quite significant (overall about 3,600 deaths in more). However, there are no increases in the number of deaths from tumors and infectious diseases “.

The decrease observed in the frequency of deaths from external causes (-161 deaths, corresponding to -4%) represents instead “an effect of the lockdown which has determined a drastic reduction in road traffic”.
