Covid: more than 5 million orphans due to the pandemic

By the end of October, the number of children and teens who had lost at least one parent or family member caring for them to Covid had already exceeded 5.2 million. In Italy there were 3,800. This is what a study coordinated byImperial College of London published on The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health.

“We estimate that for every person who died from the Covid-19 pandemic, one child has been orphaned or lost a caregiver. This is the equivalent of one child every six seconds facing a greater risk of lifelong adversity. unless adequate and timely support is provided, “said one of the authors of the study, Susan Hillis.

The research was based on Covid mortality and birth rate data in 20 model countries, including Italy; the results obtained were then projected on a global scale.

In 3 out of 4 cases of parental loss (76.5%), the victim was the father, while the most affected age group was that of adolescents. A great variability was also observed between countries with a higher incidence of the phenomenon in those with lower income.

“Losing a parent or grandparent is a painful experience for any child,” says one of the study’s authors. Chris Desmond. “Our findings show the urgent need to invest in response plans that focus on children at greatest risk and in the most affected locations. Hesitation is a luxury we cannot afford.”
