Covid: study, the pandemic destabilizes the state-citizens – health relationship

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 09 – The recent protests in many countries are a sign of how the pandemic is destabilizing the relationship between citizens and the state. This was revealed by a study by the Oslo Peace Research Institute published in the journal Psychological Science.
“The pandemic has destroyed our normal way of life, generating frustration, social exclusion and many other concerns,” comments Henrikas Bartusevicius, co-author of the study. “Our research shows that the psychological burden of living in a pandemic has also fueled anti-government and anti-system attitudes, which have triggered violence in several countries.” The group led by Bartusevicius interviewed 6,000 adults living in the United States, Denmark, Italy and Hungary asking them if and how the pandemic had negatively affected their finances, health, relationships and rights, if they felt dissatisfied with their society and government, and motivated. to engage or had already protested or participated in political violence. Thus, an impressive link emerged between the psychological burden of Covid-19 and highly destructive feelings and behaviors, including the use of violence for a political cause. On the other hand, there was no consistent relationship between the weight of the pandemic and the motivations to engage in forms of peaceful activism. “We were surprised to see that the weight of the pandemic does not need further triggers to motivate political violence, it is enough on its own,” he continues. The research found that in the United States, those who experienced the greatest burden of the pandemic were also more likely to participate in violence during Black Lives Matter protests and counter-protests. The study showed that in Denmark there was the lowest burden of Covid and in Hungary the highest. According to the researchers, the pandemic and lockdowns have affected other social groups unevenly, producing the feeling of anger and injustice that can be directed against governments. For this reason, when it ends, the recovery programs will also have to repair relations between citizens and the political system. (HANDLE).
