Covid vaccines. So Britain and Israel are beating the virus

by admin

New infections and deaths from Covid in Israel and Great Britain have never been so low since mid-January, the two countries that together with the United States are more active on the mass vaccination front. In Israel after the peak of 10,105 new infections on January 12, there was a continuous decline to 811 new infections on March 22. The deaths instead peaked on January 28 (96) and then steadily dropped to 11 deaths on March 22 (out of a total of deaths from Covid since the beginning of the pandemic which reaches 6,100, with over 828,200 total infections).

The vaccination campaign is fast approaching the desirable threshold of 70%, or herd immunity. To date, over 9,780,000 doses of the vaccine have been used, with an administration rate that in recent weeks has reached 70,000 doses per day. Considering the two doses per person, this means that 54% of the Israeli population is now vaccinated. This ability to immunize the population derives from the large quantities of vaccine doses available, also thanks to the agreement with Pfizer which, given the possibility of testing the vaccine in Israel, guaranteed a huge supply. Also thanks to this strategy, the lockdown of offices and companies that began in December ended in Israel at the end of January, while most schools have been active for months (with just a few closures at the local level).

Thanks to the “Green Pass” – that is the pass granted by the health authorities to those who have already received two doses of the vaccine or to those who have recovered from Covid – since the beginning of March Israel has been able to reopen many important sectors for the economy: hotels, theaters, concerts, restaurants, gyms and swimming pools. From the point of view of transport, on the other hand, since the beginning of December, to counter the spread of variants of Sars-Cov-2, Israel has been banned from entering and exiting international flights, except in exceptional cases. All travelers arriving in Israel, whether by air or by sea or by land, must produce a positive swab within 72 hours of arrival in order to circulate in the country.

UK data on new infections and deaths

In the UK, the peak of new infections per day occurred on January 5 (60,916), and the figure dropped steadily to 5,342 new infections on March 22. For deaths from Covid similar trend: peak on January 19 (1610) and constant decline until March 22 (16 deaths). 4,302,000 were infections since the start of the pandemic and over 126,170 deaths. The remarkable decline that has been seen since mid-January is not only the result of the administration of the more than 30 million doses of the vaccine (which, considering the need for two doses per person, allow us to estimate that over 22.7% of the English population is has been vaccinated to date) but also – and above all – the national lockdown in force since 4 January (with the closure of companies, excluding essential sectors, and schools: only the latter have been reopened since 8 March). To stem the new variants, not only are we proceeding at a very fast pace with daily vaccinations and tampons (with peaks exceeding 860,000), but also maintaining (since December) the blocking of flights from the regions most affected by the most recent variants of the virus.
