The downward trend continues but global numbers are still high, -26% infections and -16% deaths in the Old Continent

Milan, May 19 (beraking latest news Salute) – In the last week the decline in new cases of Covid-19 and deaths continues worldwide. Even if the numbers, reports the World Health Organization (WHO) in its latest update, the numbers remain high and the incidence remains among the highest recorded since the beginning of the pandemic: in fact, there are more than 4.8 million infections and 86 thousand deaths reported in the last 7 days considered, according to data updated to 16 May. The decrease is respectively 12% in new cases and 5% in deaths compared to the previous week. This downtrend has been going on for 3 weeks.

Leading the decline is Europe, which records the most significant change: a 26% decline compared to the previous week in new cases (684,903 in the last 7 days, equal to 14% of those recorded globally) and deaths down by 16% (16,255 in a week). Europe is followed by the Eastern Mediterranean (-22% new cases per week and the same 16% decline in deaths). But all regions report a decline in new cases this week with the exception of the Western Pacific, where the number remains in line with the previous week.

The situation does not change much in the Southeast Asian region either. And again this week India continues to have the highest number of new cases reported (2,387,663 new cases, down 13%), followed at a distance by Brazil (437,076 new cases, up by 3%), United States (235,638 new cases; 21% decrease), Argentina (151,332 new cases; up 8%) and Colombia (115,834 new cases, up 6%).
