Prosecutors had asked for a nine-year prison sentence for the footballer, while lawyers representing the woman were aiming for a 12-year sentence. The defense had instead asked for the athlete’s acquittal or, in case of conviction, a one-year sentence plus compensation of 50,000 euros for the victim.
The woman told prosecutors that she had been dancing with the outsider and had voluntarily entered the bathroom of the nightclub, but that she later wanted to leave and that he prevented her from doing so. She said that the athlete slapped her and insulted her
and forced to have sexual intercourse against her will.

Dani Alves modified his defense during the investigative phase while he was in custody. First he denied any sexual contact with the woman,
he then admitted to having had sexual intercourse with her but said it was consensual. The footballer justified the change of version by saying that he was trying to save his marriage. During the trial, the Brazilian full-back’s defense was concentrated
about trying to prove that Alves was drunk that evening.
