Diabetic foot, a course on regenerative medicine is underway

For this reason, there are several figures who will be present on November 26 and 27 in Caserta, at the III Advanced Course in Multi-specialty Regenerative Medicine-Surgery organized by the SIMCRI School, the professional training school of the Italian Society of Multi-specialty Regenerative Medicine and Surgery. Focus of the two days: the possibilities of regenerative medicine in the treatment of diabetic foot.

By diabetic foot we mean all those transformations, which can occur both in those suffering from type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes due to the disease and the presence of any cofactors, and which affect practically all tissues, from blood vessels to muscles, cartilages, nerves, skin, with the risk of ulcers and necrosis. The treatment of the diabetic foot takes place through several strategies, starting from the management of the glycaemia at the origin of the problem, and then to the administration of antibiotics in case of infections, up to measures to relieve discomfort, such as the use of orthotics.

Sometimes, however, these measures may not be enough, and regenerative medicine could also help, says Michele Angelo Farina, Honorary President and Founder of SIMCRI and President of SIMCRI School: “This condition has a great impact both on the patient’s life, because it can make him invalid, both from an economic point of view, because the costs borne by the Health System are important “. There are at least three possible paths offered by regenerative medicine, continues Farina: “The first is the infusion, in the area near the ulcer, of stem cells from the bone marrow, adipose tissue or peripheral blood. The second is the application, directly on the wound, of a gel made with Platelet Rich Plasma, called PRP. The third is the administration of topical ozone therapy. These treatments stimulate growth factors, which allow tissue regeneration. The procedures are simple and non-traumatic “.

For diabetic foot ulcers the “evolved PRP” is used, a particular version developed only in recent years. “The difference is in the addition of the monocyte component,” Farina explains. “These treatments are also indicated for non-diabetic wounds. It is a vast field of application, just think that in Italy there are 2 million patients with leg ulcers. For vascular surgery and, in particular, arteriopathies, to give the best benefits is the infusion of stem cells. The centers that practice these therapies, which can be administered both individually and in synergy, must be authorized according to the legislation and follow the guidelines of our scientific society and the Ministry of Health ” .

And in fact the 2021 edition of SIMCRI School, also open from Eugenio Caradonna, National President of the Society e Bruno Amato, vascular surgeon at the Federico II University Hospital of Naples, will be an opportunity to speak also of the other fields of application of the stimulation of growth factors: nand its usefulness in orthopedics will be analyzed (with a focus on trauma and knee pathologies), in chronic venous disease, in sports and aesthetic medicine.
