“Gender medicine instead wants to investigate the differences between men and women, laying the foundations to build the road towards personalized care”.

A first step in this sense is represented by the “Gender Attention” study, which, on a sample of 1200 people throughout Italy (400 men, 400 women of childbearing age and 400 in menopause), will evaluate the differences in the side effects caused by cyclosporine for the treatment of psoriasis.

Recognizing a heart attack

But beyond the plans for the future, what are the differences between men and women already known from gender medicine? The one most talked about is cardiovascular disease. THE symptoms of heart attack they are in fact very dissimilar: in men manifests itself with the classic oppressive and short-lasting pain in the chest, which can radiate to the left arm.

“In the women, on the other hand ”, explains Professor Franconi,“ we have a pain radiating to the shoulders, back, neck, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, exhaustion, anxiety and weakness ”. The result? Often the heart attack is mistaken for the flu or gastric problems and so it is not treated properly.
