The third dose of the vaccines can be given to immunosuppressed people at least 28 days after the second dose is given. This is the conclusion reached by the EMA. The recommendation from the Amsterdam-based EU agency, a note reads, comes after studies have indicated that an extra dose of these vaccines increases the ability to produce antibodies against the virus that causes Covid-19 in patients who have underwent a transplant and therefore have a weakened immune system.
Ema also evaluated that a booster of Pfizer vaccine (the Comirnaty) contributes to increased antibody production in people aged 18 to 55 when given at least six months after the second dose. This is what is stated in the note released today by the European Agency. The administration of a third dose of the Moderna vaccine, Spikevax, remains the subject of evaluation.
Meanwhile, according to a study, the third dose may not be necessary for everyone. For the Neuroimmunology Laboratory of the Santa Lucia IRCCS hospital in Rome, the second dose of anti-Covid vaccine produces not only the antibody response but also creates the immunological memory capable of protecting the person in the long term. The study confirms the presence of memory T lymphocytes for at least 6 months from the first dose of the vaccine, confirming the development of a cellular response that is maintained over time. For healthy subjects, therefore, the researchers note, “the third dose of vaccine may not be necessary”.
