The environmental quality within pig farms has been identified as an important risk factor for the development of respiratory pathologies and behavioral problems such as caudophagy. The LIFE-MEGA project aimed to address this concern through the evaluation of two new technologies – a dry filter and a wet filter. These technologies have shown promising results in reducing gas and particle emissions, thereby improving the welfare of the animals. The association between environmental quality and animal welfare is crucial in ensuring the well-being of animals within the farming environment. The study, conducted in transition farms in Spain and fattening farms in Italy, highlighted the potential of these technologies in improving air quality and the overall health of the animals on the farms. The impact of ammonia, carbon dioxide, and suspended particles, and how they contribute to health and well-being conditions, has been further elaborated in this study.

The study further highlights that the new Spanish animal welfare regulations require regular monitoring of ammonia and carbon dioxide levels, emphasizing the importance of environmental quality in animal welfare. The results and further details of the research are available in the February issue of Suisse. This will be beneficial to the overall improvement of air quality in pig farms, thus enhancing the welfare of the animals within these facilities and ensuring healthier livestock.
