Few still know that the first Alzheimer’s drug exists and here’s what it is

by admin

Today we are talking about Alzheimer’s and a progress in science and research towards this disease. Alzheimer’s is that neurodegenerative disease that appears in old age and affects brain cells causing severe memory loss. It is not only the memory that is scratched but the disease causes considerable cognitive difficulties. Furthermore, it could also cause difficulties in reasoning which consequently affect the conversation.

We just recently published an article on what we should eat and what we should do to prevent Alzheimer’s. Just as it might be interesting to read the article that deals with which drugs to take to prevent the disease.

Few still know that the first Alzheimer’s drug exists and here’s what it is

Speaking of drugs, science and research continue to amaze us because a very important drug has been tested.

Few still know that the first Alzheimer’s drug exists and here’s what it is: Aducanumab. It is a monoclonal antibody to be given to the patient at the first signs of dementia, in order to block cognitive degeneration. The researchers wanted to develop something that would affect the neuro-fibrillar accumulations common to Alzheimer’s patients. Precisely for this reason the research has led to experimenting a strategy in this sense with Aducanumab.

Is it really effective?

The drug, tested on Alzheimer’s patients, went through a very troubled process. Scientific evidence claims that the drug is not 100% effective, so much so that its approval has encountered many problems. The drug may only work in the first stage and during the early symptoms of dementia. Tests have shown that it would help delay cognitive decline but did not seem effective in later stages of the disease. In fact at the moment, research on this drug has been stopped so much that the independent committee of the Food and Drug Administration did not express favorable opinions. The latter, on the other hand, approved the drug to treat Alzheimer’s, despite the committee having expressed the will not to continue.

What is the future of the drug?

To date we are still not aware of the future of the drug and its effectiveness in the most advanced stages. However, the Food and Drug Administration asked to continue with a new experimentation process.

Who knows if once all the clinical tests have been passed, the drug could really work and be an effective weapon against Alzheimer’s.
