The arrival of autumn for the entire northern hemisphere, where Italy is also located, is scheduled for 22 September.

First of all, we are heading towards a phase full of mental commitments and often also of stress: there are those who start working again and those who return to school.

To all this we must add the climate change that leads us from hot temperatures to the mild and cool ones of autumn and the more rigid ones of winter.

The rhythm with which light and dark alternate and the days are shortened visibly also changes.

The change of season is, therefore, a moment of great disruption for our body which must adapt to new rhythms and temperatures.

In this period, often, a series of very common symptoms could appear, which could be simply associated with the transition from summer to autumn and then to winter.

There are no clear and scientific answers as to why, every time autumn arrives, our body goes into crisis and no longer responds as before.

One of the first symptoms could be the insomnia we experience all those times when we can’t sleep even though we would like to sleep.

One of the causes could be dictated by the modification of the secretion rhythms of melatonin, a hormone that regulates the very important sleep-wake cycle.

These rhythms are in fact linked to the periods of exposure to light and dark which in autumn change significantly compared to summer.

Two other symptoms could be fatigue and sleepiness.

When we are tired and sleepy, the brain does not work and concentrates as it should; even the most mundane tasks are complicated and boring.

Everything is amplified if you think that you are coming from a period of total relaxation during which even the mind has pulled the plug.

Head and stomach

We may also experience slight anxiety and irritability that could be associated with lack of sleep and the general change in temperatures and pressure. But also the fact that it is more difficult to concentrate and get the job done.

Finally, a last symptom of the transition from summer to autumn could be gastric disturbances, probably linked to the sometimes sudden upheaval of the climate.

How can you intervene

Few, therefore, think so but these four symptoms could be caused by the change of season.

Let’s see what small precautions could be put in place to counter them:

  • Reintroduce, after the excesses of the summer, a healthier and more balanced diet with light and easy to digest foods;
  • Start over with a gradual physical activity, perhaps outdoors, to relieve stress;
  • Regulate sleep rhythms and create a little relaxation ritual before going to sleep.
