Foldable smartphones from Samsung, perhaps something has changed

by admin

The pre-orders of the Samsung’s foldable smartphones have done very well, in some cases even beyond expectations. First of all in Korea, where the company had already registered about 450 thousand requests last Sunday, but also in Europe: in Germany, demand has put the company in difficulty, which had to delay shipping the 512GB model of the Galaxy Z Fold3. Considering the entire sales chain, in Korea alone the number of pre-ordered devices could even reach 800 thousand units and the psychological threshold of one million pieces sold may not be so far off.

The new turn that Samsung has taken with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3

I am important numbers, especially if we consider that the previous Galaxy Z Fold2, also in Korea, had not exceeded 80 thousand units pre-ordered, and that these numbers also exceed those recorded for the most recent models of the gamma Galaxy S e Note, respectively at the beginning of 2021 and at the end of last summer. The success of the new models is closely linked to the lowering of prices, which has made the two foldables more affordable and in fact comparable to other high-end premium smartphones.

Also interesting is the demographic distribution of interest in new smartphones with folding screen. According to the Korea Herald newspaper, 49% of pre-orders of the Galaxy Z Fold3 were made by consumers between the ages of 20 and 30, while the same group of users is responsible for 57% of the pre-orders of the Galaxy Flip3. The preference is certainly due to the price difference, but also to the greater appeal of the clamshell folding to a young audience, which is exactly the target that Samsung had in mind for this model.

I actual sales numbers maybe we will get to know them in a few months, but in the meantime the commercial path of the two devices seems to start on the right foot. According to analysts from Counterpoint Research, the units of foldable smartphones sold will increase from about 3 million to 9 million by the end of 2021. Samsung will be the absolute protagonist of the segment, with an estimated market share of 88%.
