Food waste, the supply chain adopts the conscious label

by admin

An innovation that could be worth the nine million tons of food that end up in the dustbin every year in Europe, due to the misinterpretation of the food label. An economic, ethical problem with an environmental impact equal to 22 million tons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. To help solve the problem, the Too Good To Go app launches the awareness campaign linked to conscious etiquette in Italy.

The first information that must be clear to consumers is that only foods with the wording “To be consumed by” they must not be ingested after the expiration date, under penalty of health risk. Instead the wording “Best before” (Minimum Storage Term) indicates a manufacturer’s estimate of the best quality period of the product. Exceeding this indication does not mean that the product poses a risk to our health: for this reason it is enough to rely on the senses and the conscious label will contain the explicit wording «Often good as well. Observe. Smell. Taste », thus inviting the consumer to make a possible choice, based on the quality of the food (taste, aroma, fragrance, etc.). An important distinction, which is valid 10% of food waste, and which is not known by 67% of Italians, according to a survey by Altroconsumo.

From the Marca del Consumatore to Granarolo

The first brand to have adopted this label in Italy as early as February is “La Marca del Consumatore”, with its tomato sauce, sold in Carrefour points. «By clarifying the label we can help reduce the 1.6 billion tons of food that are wasted every year (FAO data). With the conscious label we have had excellent feedback and we will extend the initiative to pasta, oil and all the products in which it will be possible “explains Enzo Di Rosa, founder for Italy of the consumer movement born in France that promotes equity in the supply chain and which in Italy has reached a community of 400 members and 10 thousand supporters.

In these days you can already find on the shelves of organic shops throughout Italy some NaturaSì brand products with the indication of the minimum shelf life, as well as references of Salumi Pasini and Wami, which carry the Consapevole label. Other companies such as Granarolo, Fruttagel, Bel Group, Gruppo VéGé, Raspini Salumi, Nestlé, Danone and Olio Raineri have committed to adding the further specification on some of their products in the course of 2021.

The revision of the EU regulation

The initiative brings forward by one year the proposed revision of the EU Regulation on Date Marking (1169/2011), to improve and differentiate, in terms of visual impact, format and terminology, the two indications on the label. “50% of food waste is attributable within the domestic walls – explains Professor Arnaldo Dossena, expert in Confconsumatori – For this reason we have expressed ourselves favorably, within the special commission of the Ministry for Economic Development (called to express an opinion at the request of the European Union ed.) so that the terms are modified “.
