There is a historic record in the new edition of Ericsson’s Mobility Report: in the second quarter of 2021 with 84 million new 5G subscriptions – linked to a 5G device – for a total of 380 million worldwide there was overtaking on 4G. The latter recorded, in the same period, 71 million new subscriptions, thus reaching a total of 4.8 billion, or 59% of all mobile subscriptions in the world. Subscriptions to 3G / HSPA networks only (-46 million) and 2G / GSM (-52 million) are down. 176 operators have launched 5G services on the market globally.

Overall, mobile Internet use continues to grow: in the second quarter of 2021 the number of mobile broadband subscriptions increased by almost 100 million, for a total of approximately 6.8 billion, an increase of 7% per year. over year.

Growth in mobile broadband subscriptions and ever-increasing video consumption also lead to an increase in mobile data traffic which grew by 44% between Q2 2020 and the same period of 2021, reaching 72 Exabytes (EB) per month. On the other hand, quarterly growth was around 9%.

Finally, the second quarter of 2021 closed with approximately 8.1 billion SIM cards worldwide, recording an increase in mobile network subscriptions of 50 million units in the second quarter of the year.

The largest quarterly contribution comes from China (+13 million), followed by Indonesia (+5 million) and the United States (+3 million). Confirming, in fact, that the number of SIMs in circulation exceeds that of the world human population, with a penetration rate of 103%.

The number of unique mobile subscribers, on the other hand, is approximately 6 billion. The gap between single users and total SIMs is largely due to the presence of multiple SIMs per person or inactive subscriptions.
