Imperatore graduated with a master’s degree in psychology, in 2020 she began development of Freud’s Bones self-taught, working mostly at night, because during the day she was employed in a cleaning company. In the same year she won the Redbull Indie Forge award and successfully ran a campaign on Kickstarter. And now the game is having an excellent response from critics and audiences: “I have put all my paturnia, existential crises, all pain and all my sense of loneliness into this product. Gasoline was my social anger, the sense of asphyxiation that gave me a job that did not make me feel at ease, that took away my energy without giving me stimuli. Being able to dedicate herself completely to the project took her sleep away: “It moved my internal axis and I struggled with other limits and other constraints, but I was the winner of this battle. Freud’s Bones is a point and click adventure which puts basic concepts of psychoanalysis at the center of the narrative, a personal story that, in the player’s hands, becomes universal: “In this game, Freud and I have merged together. His anxieties, the torment of the savior syndrome that grips him, his sense of isolation, everything that burns inside him also burns inside me. I have not replaced him, I simply have read the diaries, absorbed his personality and felt him close as a friend, I hated it as we hate the parts of us that we cannot tolerate due to their complexity ”. Everything in Axel Fox’s work becomes universal, because pain and crisis have universal languages, as well as the acceptance of being able to be wonderful but also pregnant with selfishness and defects.

Freud’s Bones it allows to learn some basic principles of psychoanalysis, useful for dealing with the 4 main cases proposed in the adventure, Emperor explained to us: “The cases are hybrids, there is truth, history, but mainly invention. I built two with little biographical information from two supporters of the progetto Kickstarter who have chosen to become patient. I read their stories and erected real clinical narratives, putting myself in Freud’s shoes, facing their symptoms and letting the player choose the right approach to solve them “.

The gameplay is based on two directives: during the therapeutic dialogue you can read the medical records and the notebook that contains a compendium of psychoanalytic theory, and Imperatore made it clear that “choosing the type of approach, the order of the arguments and the attitude, it is possible or not to break through the patient with the aim of making him confess the trauma underlying the symptom. In the second part we interface with the material that we managed to bring out and interpretations are given, up to the final diagnosis and prescription “.
