Google’s idea: machine learning and AI to predict the effects of floods

by admin

The effects of climate change, especially in the form of floods, torrential rains and consequent flooding, are increasingly frequent and evident, not only at the other end of the world but also in Italy, as shown by what happened recently in Sicily e Calabria. And more and more frequent is the use of technology to try to stem these effects. And maybe even foresee them.

AND what Google has been doing since more or less 2018, since it has put in place a system of monitoring waterways and alerts for people living in areas at risk: at the moment, the program covers much of India and Bangladesh and covers an area inhabited by 360 million people, which over time have received 115 million alerts (up from the initial 220 million inhabitants and 40 million alerts).

How the Google Flood Hub works
What the Californian company does is collect data on how much it rains, where and for how long, then using it machine learning e artificial intelligence to process this information: the result is a forecasting model that estimates not only how much the level of a river or stream will rise, but also how much land it will flood around it.

To do this, in a way that is easy to understand, Google uses maps from Maps, drawing on the map of the affected area the part that is likely to end up flooded, as can be clearly seen by accessing the Google Flood Hub site: “Our flood warnings ensure that people receive essential information by viewing the flood maps – they explained by the company – which show the extent and depth of these starting from Google Maps”.

The alerts then arrive on smartphones in the form of a notification (image above) and they can be clicked for more information: Google’s intention is to “expand these alarms to countries in South Asia and South America and then take it to other countries around the world”.
