Gorillas fires 540 people in Italy

Gorillas will lay off 540 employees in Italy. These are workers from Rome, Florence, Milan Bergamo and Turin, while the Italian company will be put into liquidation. It is the complaint of Fit-Nothe union with which Gorillas had signed the agreement last April to frame the riders with the national labor contract for the logistics sector.

The food delivery startup, which only last October closed a record one billion euro investment round, had already announced last May the need to reduce its staff by sending about 300 employees home. Then the decision to cut 540 employees in Italy, which would add to the 300 in May.

The German company, which became a unicorn – with a valuation of more than one billion euros – in 2021, first benefited from the explosion of the food delivery sector during the pandemic. But with the reopening and the drop in orders, also due to the economic crisis triggered at the beginning of the year by inflation and geopolitical tensions, the company had to face a profound restructuring plan.

“This episode re-proposes the debate on how these food delivery platforms are established in our country in the absence of clear and defined rules that protect female workers. We are sure that the Ministry of Labor will take an interest in the matter, therefore, in the coming days, we will ask Minister Orlando for an official meeting to address the unfortunate issue ”, the union denounced.

The valuation of startups is changing. And for Italy it could be good news

Gorillas is not the only startup to have fired in 2022. Only the food delivery sector has seen a profound crisis in turnover and business, thanks to macroeconomic causes and users’ propensity to purchase. Getir, a direct competitor of Gorillas, has in turn announced the dismissal of approximately 15% of its workforce, 4,000 employees worldwide. As well as all the startups related to the world of cryptocurrencies, which in recent months have announced deep cuts in staff. For many market analysts, this series of layoffs is a pretty clear sign that the boom in these sectors is over.
