green light from the EU, almost 12 million Italians affected. Who will have to do it and how it will work

Everything is ready for a new phase of vaccination campaign anti-Covid. In fact, the green light to the fourth dose for the over 60s by the European Medicines Agency (Ema), closely followed by the authorization of the Italian counterpart, Aifa, and the Ministry of Health. It is no coincidence that the Regions are already preparing for the reopening of the hubs. In fact, the idea is that the closer the autumn approaches, the more requests for vaccinations will increase, so it will be necessary to return to operationalize the structures closed in recent months and strengthen those centers that have never stopped. The most active in this sense seem to be Lazio, Campania, Calabria, Basilicata, Piedmont and Friuli. But each with its own recipe. Lazio, for example, has made it known that it is ready to reopen the hubs after October in the event of a new mass campaign with updated vaccines.

Fourth dose at the start, where will it be done? Regions ready to reopen vaccination hubs, but the focus is on general practitioners and pharmacies

HOW THE FOURTH DOSE WILL WORK
After all, this new appendix of the campaign presents us with some less certainty. First of all, the absence of a state of emergency that requires the coordination of regional actions, and secondly without the service of the emergency commissioner, General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. In his place is General Tommaso Petroni, appointed Director of the Unit for the completion of the vaccination campaign and for the adoption of other measures to combat the pandemic, starting from 1 April, a structure to be run in. So much so that – again taking the Lazio model as a reference – for the fourth dose the system will refer to general practitioners, pharmacies and vaccination centers in some hospitals: for now, in fact, there are 1500-2000 vaccines per day, a figure far below the maximum peak of 70 thousand injections per day when large hubs such as the Cloud and Auditorium absorbed a large part of the campaign.

WHO IS INTERESTED
Up to now in Italy the second booster was already offered to people over 80 and 60-79 years old with concomitant pathologies. Now, however, the Ministry of Health should extend the possibility of receiving the so-called fourth dose of the anti Covid vaccine to people between 60 and 79 years of age.. That is, according to the data of those who had access to the third dose in this particular age group, almost 12 million Italians would be involved.
However, it is considered quite unlikely that the success of the first phase of the vaccination campaign will be replicated. Suffice it to say that to date the second booster dose has been administered to 1.3 million people, just under a third of the total identified by the Ministry of Health among the elderly and subjects at risk (only one fifth of the population over 80 years decided to undergo the vaccine again). Also because the pharmaceutical companies that produce the vaccines have made it known that they are working on updated versions, more effective on the latest Covid mutations. However, drugs that will not arrive before the end of the summer (and given the previous ones hopefully before the cold season).

EMA – The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommend the administration of the second booster of the anti-Covid vaccine to all those over 60 and to vulnerable people. It reads in the April guidelines update, in response to the current epidemiological situation. “There is no time to waste” on the new vaccination campaign for the over 60s and vulnerable people. This was stated by the EU Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides, after the new recommendations of the ECDC and EMA. «I call on the Member States to immediately launch a second recall for all people over 60 and for all vulnerable people, and I urge all those who have the right to come forward and get vaccinated.»Kyriakides points out, adding that «this is how we protect ourselves, our loved ones and our vulnerable populations».
