Hackers ask for one million dollars not to disclose the data of the Israeli LGBT community

by admin

The hacker group Black Shadow returns to strike again and the cyber war between Iran and Israel resurfaces from the shadows. With a message on Telegram, the group of cyber-activists, apparently linked to Iran, asked for one million euros in cryptocurrency not to disclose personal data stolen from a very popular site in the Israeli LGBT community, Atraf.

“If we have a million dollars in our digital wallet in the next 48 hours we will not disclose this information and we will not sell it to anyone. This is the best we can do. “To give substance to its threats, the group immediately put into circulation a thousand records relating to subscribers to the portal, which, however, collects the data of about a million people, triggering panic among its users. . Atraf, is in fact a geolocalized dating service very popular in the app version to enjoy the nightlife in Israel, in particular in the Tel Aviv area, and is a point of reference for the Israeli LGBT community of which it promotes all the events. The Atraf site, hosted by the Cyberserve company, has still been out of use since Saturday.

Following this ransomware attack, the Aguda Association for LGBT Equality in Israel asked the National Cyber Directorate to “act urgently to prevent data leaks”, adding that the disclosure of such personal information is “a danger. for the well-being and safety of users “.

Yoram Hacohen, president of the Israel Internet Association, upped the ante and said that “the state here has failed to protect its citizens. The matter is serious and directly concerns the safety of people’s lives, since some users are LGBTQ people who keep their free choices hidden ”.

Black Shadow e la cyberwar
The financially and ideologically motivated Black Shadow hackers, however, did not just attack Atraf but, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, entered the servers of the service’s hosting company, which among its customers includes the websites of public transport companies. Dan and Kavim, the Holon Children’s Museum, the Pegasus travel company and the blog of the public broadcaster Kan. And it is not the first time that Black Shadow has attacked Israeli computer systems. The victim last year was the insurance company Shirbit which, by refusing to pay the ransom, saw the data of its customers end up in the DarkWeb. Many of Shirbit’s clients are from the public sector, and images of private documents released included a government official’s vehicle registration and credit card details, as well as personal correspondence, marriage certificates, even the president’s personal details. Tel Aviv District Court. And this time it could end the same way.

In recent weeks, Iranian hackers have also attacked some Israeli hospitals with heavy ransom demands that have not been paid. The first hypotheses converge on a group connected to Fox Kitten 2, a dangerous Iranian APT.

In parallel, several attacks on Iranian IT services have been recorded in recent months, blamed on Israeli agents. The last concerned the blocking of the supply of fuel to civilian customers of the Islamic Republic and last year instead of a port in the Strait of Hormuz and some industrial sites near the town of Natanz. The latter would have been the Israeli response to a series of cyber attacks that hit water desalination plants around Jerusalem in July 2020, attributed to Iranian cyber paramilitary groups linked to the Guardians of the Revolution.

According to Professor Lior Tabansky of Tel Aviv University’s Blavatnik Center for Cybersecurity, “it is possible that the facts can be explained within the long cyber conflict between Iran and Israel. While this last attack was effective, it was not sophisticated at all, because it exploited known vulnerabilities in the hosting service. However, we know that if the Iranians are able to attack us, they will do so, both to create fear and confusion and to demonstrate their offensive capacity both inside and outside the country. And the importance that the media give it helps them to pursue this goal ”.

The confirmation comes from a report in which Microsoft denounced that over the last year Iran has quadrupled its attacks, including ransomware-type attacks, against Israel.
