The historical period we have been living for almost two years now seems to have catapulted us from one moment to the next into a surreal dimension.

Probably no one would have ever imagined finding himself locked in the house for weeks and risking a penalty if he went beyond his own neighborhood. In the same way, we did not even remotely think of risking an infection of this magnitude and of such force as to send hospitals into a tailspin.

In short, we can say everything, but not that ours is an era of joy and serenity. Over time, things are clearly improving and, little by little, we have regained control of our life and daily activities.

However, there remains that veil of uncertainty and doubt that still does not make us feel totally calm. How many times, though, have we felt free to express our negative feelings without feeling guilty?

It happens that the so-called “complaint” is frowned upon and causes those who manifest it to be labeled as boring and to be avoided. Unfortunately, there is an unwritten rule that you must always be happy. But who said that it has to be like this and that it is good for your health? None, because it is exactly the opposite.

It is about that paradoxical phenomenon, but absolutely alive and constant in our society, for which we must always show a smile. Psychologists have given this phenomenon a name, calling it “toxic positivity”. We have already understood what it is, but perhaps some points escape us.

Each person, in the course of his life, experiences various emotions, positive and negative, each necessary for his growth and maturation. That’s why being sick isn’t boring, it’s normal.

But why is pretending to feel good and always having a smile on your face not really healthy? Let’s find out right away.

Because positivity can be toxic

The answer lies in the denial of reality. Simply, when you pretend to feel good you deny the evidence and suppress your feelings. Talking about your malaise is important to make it “flow”, as experts say, out of our body.

However much we may try to be well, unfortunately we must recognize that it is not always possible. Our mind is a continuous stream of thoughts and feelings and each needs to be respected. Pain also takes its time to understand and metabolize. Only in this way will we be able to move forward and not let ourselves be overwhelmed by unpleasant events, because it is only by facing our own malaise that we learn to cope with it.

Hardly anyone imagines it, but being sad and pessimistic could be good for your health and here’s why. Pay attention to our interlocutors, if they always want us to be perfect and smiling, perhaps they are not the most suitable people to let off steam with.
