Teleconsultation system saves the life of a 53-year-old woman in Savona

A recent teleconsultation system activity played a crucial role in saving the life of a 53-year-old woman from Savona, as the cardiac surgeons at the San Martino Polyclinic successfully performed a life-saving intervention.

The woman was initially rushed to the emergency room of the San Paolo hospital, where she was immediately processed by the team of Dr. Alessandro Gastaldo, director of the diagnostic department of Asl2 and regional DIAR manager. Thanks to the teleconsultation system, 1,800 CT images were sent to the surgeons at the San Martino Polyclinic within seconds.

The efficient exchange of images and the collaboration between Asl2 and Policlinico San Martino allowed for a clear diagnosis of aortic dissection, which posed a risk of rupture and cardiac tamponade. The patient was swiftly transported by helicopter to San Martino, where a successful operation was performed by the cardiac surgeons under the direction of Professor Francesco Santini. The patient is currently admitted to intensive care and responding well to post-operative processes.

The teleconsultation system, hosted on the Liguria Digitale infrastructures, has expanded its reach to cover the entire region. This system has proven to be effective in various medical fields and is now playing a crucial role in time-dependent cardiovascular diseases.

Angelo Gratarola, the health councilor, highlighted the significance of the teleconsultation system in responding promptly to critical pathologies. The general director of the Policlinico San Martino hospital, Marco Damonte Prioli, commended the effectiveness of teleconsultation and emphasized the hospital’s role as a reference hub for high complexity care.

Michele Orlando, the general director of Asl2, thanked the professionals involved in saving the patient’s life and emphasized the value of technology in healthcare activities. Enrico Castanini, the sole director of Liguria Digitale, emphasized the collaborative effort and immediate benefits brought to citizens through teleconsultation.

The teamwork and coordination between the healthcare professionals, technology providers, and the regional healthcare system have proven to be essential in saving lives and providing quality care to patients in the region. The teleconsultation system has already facilitated numerous remote consultations, benefiting a substantial number of patients throughout Liguria.
