Healthcare: Moody’s, Italy getting older, regional spending + 13% by 2035

Rome, May 13 (beraking latest news Salute) – In addition to the temporary impact due to the response to the Covid emergency, the aging of the Italian population over the next 15 years – with a share of over 65s that will rise to 30% of the total in 2040 – should lead to an increase 13% of healthcare spending in our country, which in 2035 will reach 140 billion euros a year. The agency Moody’s writes in a report that underlines how Italy and Spain will be the European countries most affected – in terms of public spending – by demographic dynamics with a progressive increase in life expectancy, after the temporary decline caused by the pandemic.

Recalling how the estimate of healthcare expenditure in Italy in 2021 is 127 billion euros, Moody’s reports that the level of per capita expenditure in our country – equal to 2,562 euros per year – is significantly lower than that of France (higher than 4 thousand euros) and Germany (over 4,800 euros). But one of the delicate points of this process – beyond the economic impact – will be the quality of the regional system, given that these local authorities will be the recipients of “a good part of the 15.6 billion euros that the Italian government has allocated to the health sector “in the national Recovery Plan. And experience – the agency recalls – shows how the ability to absorb European funds “varies between the various Regions”.
