More than 1 in 5 women over 40 have a high (17.3%) or very high (3.6%) cardiovascular risk. Even among those who take therapy to reduce blood pressure, half have blood pressure values above the norm, with 38.6% having high values and 18.7% having medium-high values. These are the results of the “Woman’s heart in pharmacy” campaign, presented this morning in Rome.

The campaign, promoted by Cittadinanzattiva, in collaboration with Federfarma and with the non-conditioning contribution of Teva, developed from 16 October to 10 November 2023, with a pilot phase involving more than 1,500 women aged 40 and over in 3 regions Italian (Lombardy, Marche and Sicily). In the 111 pharmacies that joined the initiative, women were able to undergo a cardiovascular risk assessment and an electrocardiogram.

The campaign faces “a double challenge”, commented the general secretary of Cittadinanzattiva Anna Lisa Mandorino.

“On the one hand, on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, especially among women who until a few decades ago were considered to be less at risk than men, while today studies tell us that, especially after menopause, the incidence of cardiovascular events, including serious ones unfortunately; on the other hand, on the need to extend, also through the pharmacy network, screening to the entire population, to intercept those who are not fully aware of the risk factors connected to the various pathologies”, he added.
