Emilia-Romagna Region Continues Free Screening for Hepatitis C in 2024

The Emilia-Romagna Region has confirmed that free screening for hepatitis C will continue in 2024. The goal of the initiative is to detect the disease early on and provide the necessary treatments to all individuals who test positive. The screening campaign, which was launched in early 2022, targets three specific groups: citizens born between 1969 and 1989 registered in the health registry (including foreigners temporarily present), people followed by public addiction services, and prisoners in prison.

As of December 31, 2023, a total of 434,846 tests had been conducted, leading to the identification of 816 positive cases. The participation rate among target citizens nearly doubled in 2023, increasing from 17.9% in the previous year to 32.0%. The Regional Health Service has relaunched the communication campaign “You have to think about it” to encourage more individuals to participate in the screening.

Hepatitis C is caused by the HCV virus and can have serious implications for the liver if left untreated. The screening test is simple and does not require a medical prescription. The Region aims to intercept the disease in its early stages and provide appropriate therapies to those who test positive.

The screening campaign has been successful in identifying and treating individuals with hepatitis C. To date, 1,359,915 citizens have received screening in Emilia-Romagna, with 816 cases of positivity detected. Those who test positive are referred to specialist treatment centers and begin therapeutic treatment. Approximately 95% of individuals treated for hepatitis C recover completely, eliminating the infection.

The communication campaign of the Regional Health Service, titled “You have to think about it,” aims to raise awareness about the importance of hepatitis C screening. The campaign features video and radio spots, as well as information on social media and printed materials. Citizens aged between 35 and 55 are encouraged to participate in the screening tests to protect their health and that of others.

For more information on the screening campaign and how to participate, individuals can visit the Region’s website or the dedicated landing page of the communication campaign at www.screeningpatitisc.it. The campaign will run until February 29th, reaching out to more individuals and promoting the importance of hepatitis C screening.
