Italian Study Shows Synergistic Effect of Mediterranean Diet on Cholesterol Levels

A recent Italian study has highlighted the synergistic effect between plant sterols and bioactive components present in the Mediterranean diet for reducing LDL cholesterol levels. This is a significant finding as reducing LDL cholesterol is essential in lowering the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD).

The study, known as the DESCO study and conducted by the University of Bologna, involved 55 participants aged between 20 and 65 with moderately high cholesterol levels. The results showed that the positive effects of adopting the Mediterranean diet can be further enhanced by the use of plant sterols. These sterols were found to reduce LDL cholesterol by an average of 12.14 mg/dL, with greater improvements seen in subjects with higher baseline levels of plasma LDL-C.

The Mediterranean diet has been linked to reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the past, making it a popular choice for those looking to improve their heart health. Adding plant sterols to this diet could provide even greater benefits in terms of lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease.

This study serves as a reminder of the importance of a healthy diet in maintaining cardiovascular health. By incorporating plant sterols and following a Mediterranean diet rich in bioactive components, individuals can take proactive steps towards improving their cholesterol levels and overall heart health.
