High myopia: is the Covid vaccine risky?

by admin

Request. I would like to get the vaccine but the fear is great. I suffer from various pathologies: I have a high myopia with 24 diopters in the left eye and 26 in the right eye plus 1.50 of astigmatism per eye. For a few months I have not been able to see well even up close. Also, I have a bit high eye pressure while my eye microcircle is low. I add that I am taking a thyroid tablet. Risk of retinal detachment in both eyes due to high myopia. The right eye, in particular, in addition to being lazy, has a very thinned retina. Do you think I can get the vaccine?

Reply. Although you have a high myopia which in some cases can undergo secondary complications that you already know well, you should absolutely not be afraid to carry out the vaccination. In fact, it is known, as recently reported by the literature, that the side effects of the vaccine at the ocular level are rare. They mainly consist of transient circulatory disturbances affecting the retinal venous microcirculation, which resolve spontaneously. Furthermore, it must be remembered that high myopic subjects, having a very thin retina, have a much lower risk of developing retinal vascular pathologies (for example vascular occlusions and / or diabetic retinopathy); in short, a retina of an elevated myopic subject can hardly undergo circulation disturbances.
