Higher education, 7 million for specializations in the medical-health area and doctorates. The Department of Education and Vocational Training has allocated 7 million euros to support the competitiveness of young people through the enhancement of higher education. In particular, according to a note, 4 million euros are earmarked for specialization contracts in the medical-health area and 3 million for research doctorates.

“The Musumeci government continues to focus on young people and their skills – explains the regional councilor for education Roberto Lagalla (in photo) – investing in higher education, so that they can have more employment opportunities. An initiative to support the development of a knowledge-based economy, with particular attention to higher education in the health sector and university research, because investing in innovation remains a priority in any case “.

Through the funding of 36 specialized training contracts of specialization schools in the medical-health area of Sicilian universities, in addition to the ministerial one, the Region strengthens the opportunity to access courses, improves the effectiveness of tertiary education and above all it promotes the strengthening of the offer of high-profile specialist figures in the medical-health field, of particular importance especially in light of the necessary increase in health services for the Covid-19 emergency. In particular, the additional grants will cover the needs identified by the regional health department and shared with the regional Observatory for specialist medical training (Orfms) which identifies, among the most requested specializations, those in diseases of the cardiovascular system and Emergency medicine, followed by those in Diseases of the respiratory system and in Orthopedics and Traumatology.

The notice, which expires on 10 September 2021, is aimed at Sicilian graduates in Medicine and Surgery, classified in a useful position in the admission ranking to the medical-health area specialization schools of the current academic year, with an age not exceeding 35 years old and with an Isee income not exceeding 30 thousand euros. In the case of research doctorates, this is an additional funding and not a substitute for the grants already allocated for the academic year 2020/2021. In this way, the Region guarantees students more opportunities to access doctoral level training. Graduates, born or resident in Sicily, aged no more than 35 years will enjoy this additional opportunity. The fruition of the regional PhD scholarships will entail for the students the obligation to carry out a research period abroad, from 3 months to 6 months.

The overall financial endowment, made available by the Region, will be distributed to the requesting universities on the basis of the dimensional class to which they belong, in order to guarantee an equitable distribution throughout the territory. The maximum value of each additional grant, lasting three years, will vary, for the same period, from 58 thousand euros to 61 thousand euros, in relation to the duration of the study period abroad. Specifically, each university will be entitled to a number of scholarships proportional to the number of students: in particular, universities with over 30,000 students will be entitled to a maximum of 18 scholarships; 10 will go to universities between 31 and 10 thousand students; 2 to those with a number of enrollments between 10 and 2 thousand students, while a scholarship will be awarded to universities with a number of enrollments of less than 2 thousand students. Therefore, 18 scholarships will be awarded to the University of Palermo and the University of Catania, to the University of Messina 10, while 2 scholarships will be awarded to the Kore University of Enna and one to Lumsa.
