ANCONA The disease caused by Covid it does not run out once you leave the hospital wards. For those who have shown significant symptoms, the aftermath can last for months. In some cases, even a year. A prolonged post-acute phase that can present various severity and affect subjects of any age. It is a condition called long Covid and recognized as a specific disease.

For this reason, the Sostegni bis decree provides for the exemption of monitoring services for “former Covid” patients for two years: the patients will therefore not be asked to share in the cost. In the allocation of resources between the Regions to guarantee this follow-up service, the Marche is entitled to over 800 thousand euros: specifically, 404,378 euros for 2021, 350,609 in 2022 and 61,590 in 2023. A similar measure had already been foreseen by Palazzo Raffaello in 2020, but now the regional health system will adapt to the national directive. The monitoring program is aimed at patients affected by severe form of Covid, discharged from hospitalization and judged cured, and provides for the performance of outpatient specialist services, contained in the Lea, deemed appropriate for the prevention and early diagnosis of any outcomes or complications related to the previous disease, indicating the maximum frequency of execution during the follow up. The manifestations of long-Covid are divided into two categories, the general ones and the organ-specific ones. In the first case, it is persistent fatigue / asthenia, excessive fatigue, fever, muscle weakness, widespread pain, myalgia, arthralgia, worsening of perceived health, anorexia, reduced appetite, sarcopenia. The specific organ symptoms, on the other hand, decline into dyspnea, breathlessness and persistent cough.
The after-effects
Among the other consequences that the Covid-related disease may entail, there are cardiovascular, neurological, gastrointestinal, psychiatric disorders. “To facilitate access to services as much as possible for patients covered by the National Monitoring Protocol – reads the annex to the resolution of last Monday that gives green light to the provision – the figure of the Case Manager is central, to be identified possibly within of the nursing staff or hospital medical staff who took care of the patient during hospitalization “. The performance of the follow-up experimental protocol is made in such a way as to ensure a clinical-diagnostic assistance activity modulated according to the severity of the symptoms presented, also through the early diagnosis of the possible sequelae of the disease.
