WHAT determines an individual’s personality? Generations of psychologists, questionnaires in hand, have tried to schematize and quantify the different personality traits. However, the understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that characterize them remains a relatively virgin ground, explored only for a decade. The study published in the journal NeuroImage by researchers Sandra Arbula and Elisabetta Pisanu of the International School of Advanced Studies of Trieste fits into this vein which, under the supervision of Raffaella Rumiati, professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, examined brain activity of people with different degrees of empathy.
